Registering Name Servers

Your first priority in moving your site over to NetspaceOnline.net will be registering your new name servers and transferring your domain’s DNS. This sounds extremely complex but in reality this is quite a simple task. Your account has been set up with the following IP address allocations:

ns.netspaceonline.net
65.98.61.75
ns2.netspaceonline.net
65.98.61.76

IMPORTANT: You must now physically register these name servers at your registrar. Log in to your domain’s control panel and look for a link that says, “Create Name Server” or “Register DNS” and input the name server names and IPs. Your name servers won’t exist until you have done this. With that done, you can then modify your domain’s DNS record to point to the new name servers. If you require any further help with this process you can
open a support ticket via our helpdesk or alternatively use our live chat features.

If you have any problems with transferring your domain name, please let us know with whom you have your domain name registered so that we can assist you. We are always happy to help. Most registrars only require the name server names and do not require you to enter the actual IP addresses.

If you don’t yet have a domain, you can purchase one through our domain name registration and management portal NSDomains at:
http://www.nsdomains.net

Please remember that it will take a short time for your Registrar to process the delegation request and for this new DNS to propagate around the internet.

Uploading Your Site

The steps involved in getting your site online are:

(a) Prepare your web pages
(b) Upload your site
(c) Remove the "Placeholder" page

These steps are described in more detail below:

  A) Prepare Your Webpages

There are various methods you can use to actually build your website. If you are familiar with HTML, you can code your pages manually using an editor such as the generic Notepad/WordPad. Popular (and free!) HTML Editors include:

1stPage by Eversoft:
http://download.com.com/3000-2048-10033942.html?legacy=cnet

Arachnophilia:
http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html

Aranaea:
http://www.araneae.com/

Use can also create your web pages using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editor. These editors allow you create pages use “Drag ‘n’ Drop” techniques. If you have Windows as your PC’s operating system, then the chances are that you have FrontPage as part of the package. At NetspaceOnline.net, we have support for FrontPage 98/2000/2002. FrontPage requires special extensions installed on your account and has it’s own way of publishing to the server.

  B) Upload Your Website

There are two tools you can use to upload your site:

* FTP Software
* Microsoft FrontPage (for sites built with FrontPage)

These tools are alternatives - simply choose the method you prefer. More information on each of these methods is provided below.

Please note that there are other software packages available which you can use to upload your site (such as Adobe PageMill). These alternatives are not discussed explicitly here, but the FTP Software discussion below should nevertheless be helpful to you if you choose to use such software.

(i) FTP Software

"FTP Software" sounds daunting but it is actually quite straightforward to use. FTP Software is the best choice for you if your site contains a large number of files and you are not using FrontPage.

You can download some great and free FTP programs here:

WS-FTP LE
http://download.com.com/3000-2160-1572132.html?tag=list

CuteFTP
http://download.com.com/3000-2160-10000625.html?legacy=cnet

Key points to remember when uploading your site with FTP:

* Your web pages need to be uploaded into your httpdocs directory. A common mistake is to upload them into the wrong directory such as your cgi-bin or httpsdocs directory.

* CGI scripts must be uploaded in ASCII transfer mode, images should be uploaded in binary mode, and web pages can be uploaded in either mode. CGI scripts must be uploaded into your cgi-bin.

* You can upload your site by pointing your FTP software to your IP address. This means that you do not have to wait for your domain name to be transferred to our servers before you can upload your site. Once your domain has fully propagated around the net, you will be able to access your FTP account via your own domain name.

(ii) FrontPage 97/98/2000/2002

If you build your site with FrontPage and your site contains FrontPage active elements (such as hit counters, search forms etc) then you will need to use FrontPage to upload your site.

If you build your site with FrontPage but it does not contain any active elements, you do not need to upload your site using FrontPage - you can use FTP instead if you prefer.

To upload your site with FrontPage, please refer to the walk-through in the FrontPage section of our online manual.

Common problems when uploading with FrontPage include:

* Attempting to publish to yourdomain.com (wrong) rather than www.yourdomain.com (correct);

* Using the Publish button rather than choosing Publish from the File menu;

* Attempting to use the FTP user name and password rather than your FrontPage user name and password;

* Attempting to publish your site before your domain name has been registered or transferred to our servers. You should only attempt to publish your site after your domain name has been transferred.

(iii) Important notes for all upload methods:

* Your home page should be called index.html, index.htm, index.php or index.shtml.

* CGI scripts must be placed in your cgi-bin directory and have permissions set to '755'. Unix permissions can be altered through most FTP software packages.

Your site comes with a default "Placeholder" page. This page is called index.html and is in your web (httpdocs) directory. Before you upload your site you should delete this page from the httpdocs directory using your FTP program. This is because, if you call your home page, say, index.htm, then the under construction page will still appear when people point their browsers to your domain.com because the first page the server looks for is index.html. The server will only look for index.htm if index.html is not there, and will only look for index.shtml and index.php if neither index.html nor index.htm are in your httpdocs directory.

If you delete the index.html file and upload your home page, but still see the Placeholder page when you point your browser to your site, then please try pressing the Refresh/Reload button on your browser. This will usually result in your new home page appearing. If you receive a “Forbidden” error on any directory usually means that an index page is missing.

E-Mail Accounts

Before you can start sending or receiving email, you must set up at least one email account. To do this, please follow the instructions below:

1) Log in to the control panel using your control panel username and password.
2) Click on the MAIL button.
3) Enter the mail name that you want to create (i.e. "bob", “editor”, “webmaster” etc., not the full address).
4) Click on the ADD button
5) Check/Tick the "Mailbox" box
6) Enter and confirm a password that you would like to use
7) Scroll down to the bottom and click UPDATE

Done! Now you have created a new POP3 email account. You may repeat these steps and create more POP3 email accounts.

You can use a wide range of email software to collect your mail directly from your site. If you are going to be using an email client like Outlook, please remember to activate “Authenticate Outgoing Mail”, otherwise known as SMTP Auth. Not activating this will cause rcpt host errors when sending mail.

Alternatively, you can forward your mail to another address anywhere on the Internet. This can be set up easily through the Plesk Control Panel (Click on the "Mail" tab in the control panel).

If you like you can also set up a "catch all" feature, so that all mail addressed to your domain will be delivered to an email account that you specify. This 'catch-all' feature of your account can be very useful in that you can go ahead and use any alias you wish without having to set it up explicitly. You can set this up by clicking on the Preferences button in the control panel.

NetspaceOnline.net is also proud to run the best web mail software in the industry –
SquirrelMail. Visit http://www.netspaceonline.net/  and select web mail from the account login box.
